Why Join an Art Class
Introduction
Learning how to draw at home can be an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling experience. But what about joining an art group or class? Is it something you’d love to do but worry how you’d get on? Will you be out of your depth, surrounded by others whose art is so much better than yours? Will you feel intimidated, walking into a room full of strangers? Let me put your mind at rest.
Joining an art class can be a thrilling and enriching experience, but it’s not uncommon to feel a bit anxious about stepping into a new creative space. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, those pre-class jitters can sneak up on you. Here are some tips to help you overcome nerves and fully embrace your artistic journey.
Nerves are normal!
Acknowledge your feelings! It’s completely normal to feel nervous when trying something new. Acknowledge your feelings and remember that you’re not alone – many others in the class are likely to be feeling the same way. Accepting your nerves as a natural part of the process can help you feel more at ease. Find out as much as you can about the class format and the materials you’ll be using so you know what to expect. Maybe you can pop in to observe a clsss in progress and meet the instructor? Knowing what to expect can help to reduce anxiety and make you feel more prepared. Have a chat with the instructor or course organiser with any questions you may have before the classes start.
If you’re feeling particularly nervous, consider bringing a friend along to the class. Having a familiar face by your side can provide comfort and support, making the experience more enjoyable. This could be a hobby you regularly enjoy together.
Enjoy the journey
Set realistic expectations. Remember that art is a journey, not a destination. Set realistic expectations for yourself and focus on the joy of creating and what you are learning rather than striving for perfection. It’s okay to make mistakes and learn from them – that’s how you grow as an artist. Remember, even Van Gogh was once a beginner! Celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Reflect on what you’ve learned and the steps you’ve taken towards becomming a more confident artist. Every class is a step forward on your creative journey and every mistake you make is something new you’ve learned.
Focus on the positive. Shift your focus to the positive aspects of joining an art class. Think about the new skills you’ll learn, the creative outlet it provides and the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals. Embracing a positive mindset can help alleviate anxiety ad boost your confidence.
Embrace the community. Art classes are a wonderful opportunity to connect with otehrs who share your passion for creativity. Embrace the sense of community and support that comes with being part of a group. Remember, everyone is there to learn and grow together. You will find that your fellow students become a support network and will be there to celebrate your progress with you.
Take it one step at a time
Finally, be kind to yourself. It’s okay to feel nervous and it’s okay to take things at your own pace. Give yourself permission to enjoy the process and have fun. Art is about expressing yourself and finding joy in creativity. People are their own worst critic, so silence the critic within and have fun.
As you learn new skills and improve in your artistic ability, remember to date all of your work. You will look back and see the measurable progress you have made, and soon you will be hanging your own work on the wall!
Remember, the most important thing is to take that first step and join the class. Once you do, you will find that the nerves begin to fade and you’l be able to fully immerse yourself in the world of art. You’ll meet new students to support you. Many of our students have become life-long friends! Happy painting!
